The Reign of Terror began in September 1793, when the National Convention, the governing body of the French Revolution, established the Committee of Public Safety. The Committee, led by Maximilien Robespierre, was tasked with rooting out and punishing enemies of the revolution. Over the next year, the Committee presided over a reign of terror that saw thousands of people guillotined, including King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
Ferling's book provides a gripping account of the Reign of Terror, from its origins in the radicalization of the revolution to its bloody climax. He vividly portrays the key players, including Robespierre, Danton, and Marat, and he explores the complex motivations that drove them. Ferling also examines the role of the people of Paris in the Reign of Terror, and he shows how the city became a hotbed of violence and paranoia.
Are You With Us or Against Us? is a must-read for anyone interested in the French Revolution or in the history of violence and oppression. Ferling's gripping narrative and insightful analysis make this book an essential contribution to the literature on this dark chapter in human history.
