Lou Holtz is one of the most successful college football coaches of all time. His 249 victories are 10th all-time among Division I FBS coaches, and his six national coach of the year awards are the most ever won by a coach. Holtz is also the only coach to lead three different schools to bowl games.

Holtz's greatest success came at Notre Dame, where he coached from 1986 to 1996. He led the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1988 and two other national title game appearances in 1987 and 1989. Notre Dame also won or shared seven Big East Conference championships under Holtz.
