The story begins in the year 218 BC, when the Roman Republic is at the height of its power. Two young slaves, named Hanno and Epona, are captured by the Romans and taken to Rome. They are forced to work in the mines, where they are treated brutally by their masters.
One day, Hanno and Epona hear that Hannibal is leading an army of Carthaginians across the Alps to invade Italy. They decide to escape from the mines and join Hannibal's army. They travel for days, dodging Roman patrols and hiding from wolves. Finally, they reach Hannibal's camp and are welcomed into the army.
Hanno and Epona fight bravely in the Battle of Cannae, where the Carthaginians defeat the Romans in one of the greatest battles in history. They also fight in the Battle of Zama, where the Romans finally defeat the Carthaginians. After the war, Hanno and Epona return to their homeland, where they are hailed as heroes.
Slaves and Soldiers is a gripping and informative story that brings the ancient world to life. The book is perfect for children who are interested in history, adventure, and heroism.
