About the Book
Tumbling is a powerful and moving novel about the complexities of race, class, and family in America. Set in the American South during the 1950s and 1960s, the novel follows the story of two families—one black, one white—whose lives become intertwined in unexpected ways.
The black family is led by Viola, a strong and determined woman who is determined to give her children a better life than she had. The white family is led by Mr. and Mrs. Patterson, who are struggling to come to terms with the changing world around them.
As the two families' lives intersect, they are forced to confront their own prejudices and beliefs. Viola and Mr. Patterson must learn to work together to protect their children from the racism and violence that is all around them. Mrs. Patterson must come to terms with her own racism and learn to accept Viola as an equal.
Tumbling is a beautifully written and emotionally resonant novel that explores the complex and often contradictory nature of race relations in America. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the history of race in America and its continuing legacy today.
