Directing Shakespeare in America: Current Practices
An exploration of the contemporary landscape of Shakespearean directing in the United States, with in-depth case studies and interviews with leading directors.
Shakespeare's plays continue to be performed more frequently than any other playwright's work in the United States, and yet the way in which they are directed has changed dramatically over the years. In this book, leading scholars and practitioners explore the current landscape of Shakespearean directing in America, providing in-depth case studies and interviews with some of the most innovative and influential directors working today.
The book is divided into four parts, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Shakespearean directing. Part 1, "Text and Interpretation," examines the ways in which directors approach the text of Shakespeare's plays, from textual analysis to performance choices. Part 2, "Staging and Design," explores the visual and spatial elements of Shakespearean productions, from set design to costume design to lighting design. Part 3, "Actors and Performance," examines the ways in which directors work with actors to create memorable and moving performances. And Part 4, "Audience and Reception," explores the relationship between Shakespearean productions and their audiences, from the role of marketing and outreach to the impact of social media.
