Experiment 1: The Dancing Rice Experiment

Materials:

  • Clear glass or jar
  • Water
  • Uncooked rice
  • Music player

Instructions:

  1. Fill the glass or jar about halfway with water.
  2. Add a handful of uncooked rice to the water.
  3. Place the glass or jar on a flat surface.
  4. Play music through the music player and place it near the glass or jar.
  5. Observe what happens to the rice.

Explanation: The sound waves produced by the music player travel through the water and cause the rice to vibrate. This vibration creates tiny ripples in the water, which makes the rice appear to dance.

Experiment 2: The Sound Shadow Experiment

Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Flashlight
  • Speaker

Instructions:

  1. Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard about 20 cm x 30 cm.
  2. Cut a smaller rectangular piece of cardboard about 10 cm x 15 cm.
  3. Tape the smaller piece of cardboard to the center of the larger piece of cardboard.
  4. Place the cardboard in front of the speaker.
  5. Shine the flashlight at the cardboard.
  6. Turn on the speaker and play some music.
  7. Observe what happens to the shadow.

Explanation: The sound waves produced by the speaker travel through the air and cause the cardboard to vibrate. This vibration creates a shadow behind the cardboard.
